My old posts

I know the following post does not apply to the current discussions, but I have been experiencing problems with the blog, and am now able to post my writings from the first semester.

In the past couple of classes we have been discussing and debating beauty, what is beautiful as opposed to pretty, how tulips are beautiful, how beauty pertains to nature, and so forth.  I don't think we reached too much of an understanding of beauty, because there was no definition.  Before we can go on to the standards of beauty, we need a set definition, because we all have our own different definitions of beauty.
In class someone mentioned that to a mother, her child's drawings are beautiful, while others would not consider them to be special.  While I believe this to be true, I think that a different definition of beauty is being used from the one necessary for this class.  Dictionary.com has almost 20 different definitions of the word beauty, so there is no wonder why there have been problems defining exactly what is/isn't beautiful.  I am not completely sure which definition we need, but I would suggest something similar to the first definition on Dictionary.com, which reads "The quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as in shape, color, sound etc), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else..."
