I had watched a documentary on Timothy Treadwell on Animal Plant prior to watching this movie in class. The main thing that really boggles my mind is that he was not a wildlife expert by any means. He was a recovering drug and alcohol addict. I know a lot of people try to change their ways after dealing with drug and alcohol problems but running away to Alaska to live with wild animals, grizzly bears of all animals, is beyond crazy. I wonder how he survived for thirteen summers. There had to be something about him that kept him safe. Whether it was his demeanor and voice or just his will to survive and prove to others he could. Something kept him safe for that long. I think he honestly did have a closer connection to these bears than others. We know nothing about past or future lives. His mother talked about how he always loved his teddy bear, so his curiosity towards bears began at a young age and obviously never ceased. I'm not positive but I don't know anyone else that has done something like this without having the knowledge to be able to. Timothy Treadwell seemed to be without fear through all of this. Being alone for so long in my opinion would really change a person. The only think I feel he did wrong with his expeditions was taking his girlfriend with him. He had to have known the risks he was facing. He was able to survive but from the movie it was clear that she was not as content being there. There was something about Treadwell that kept him alive and I don't feel his girlfriend, or anyone else had the "power" he had.

  1. While it is a fact that he had no real education, I don't feel he should be considered uneducated. I feel this way because observation is how we originally learned about these animals. In my opinion, he was learning about bears and becoming an expert in the best way possible. I can only imagine how over 10 seasons of being alone can change a person. I really think this experience was his saving grace. He did die in the end, but he got himself out of trouble with drugs and alcohol, etc. It was beneficial for him to get out of the real world and straighten himself out. He had a good cause in mind during all of this. As for his girlfriend, I don't feel it is something to blame him. If he really didn't want to go, she would have stayed home. Maybe she begged him to go. We have so many details left out. There is a chance he begged her to come too. It was a shame that both of them had to die. According to the audio, he was begging her to leave and run away. He tried to save her but if I was her, I couldn't have ran away either. While it was one of her greatest fears, she stuck around and died with her love. It is a very sad story but they died loving each other together.

  2. I’m not sure that Kayla was necessarily claiming that Timothy Treadwell was uneducated so to speak. I think she was alluding to the fact that he might not have had the proper training to go out in the wilderness alone and deal with wild animals. However I disagree with Kayla in that Timothy made a mistake in taking his girlfriend with him. His girlfriend obviously had a similar interest in the bears as Timothy did and willingly went out to help him. Also, if I do recall correctly, Timothy upon being attacked by the bear, urged his girlfriend to leave before she was harmed however she must’ve shared that passion for the bears and Timothy to stay and try and help him. That was her own prerogative that Timothy shouldn’t be held responsible for. Also, how you brought up that 10 seasons of isolation will change a person is a very good point that we should take into consideration when reviewing his life and his actions.
